GOSHEN - Brooke Edison, a high jump regional qualifier in 2023, returned to Foreman Field with her LaVille teammates for the 34th Goshen Relays Saturday. Edison was a 14th seed last spring and in 2024, was back to compete again with the hopes of a different outcome. IHSAA advancement was not on the line. Yet. That will come in May. Saturday, Edison cleared 5'-0" to capture the Class B Goshen Relays title. In fact, she was the best of the 24 jumpers, regardless of class. Overall, the LaVille girls track and field team finished in 7th place with 39 points. Hanover Central won the overall team title with 110 points. With that return trip to Goshen for Edison, one can tell she is working hard towards improvement. "For the start of the season I have focused hard on high jump," said the Lancer junior. "I have been trying to improve from my best from last year which was 5 '-1”. As the season progresses I hope to make it to regionals and continue winning high jump." With a total of 16 teams - 8 in Class A and 8 in Class B - Edison noted that she was focusing on herself and not watching the other performers. "There were 8 teams in class A and 8 teams in class B so there was definitely a lot of competition," explained Edison. "I just did what I could do, which was my best and I had to focus on my performance rather than seeing how others were doing. "There is a lot of technique involving high jump and a lot to do with having the right form getting over the bar. I try to focus on my speed along with bringing my body up over the bar at the right timing." All of the athletes that competed Saturday dealt with the cold and windy conditions. "It being really cold and windy definitely made it difficult to stay loose," explained Edison. "And remain calm if the wind is pushing the bar." The temperatures started out at 39 degrees and built to a slow climb to 45 by the end of the relays. Winds were steady between 16-18 miles per hour throughout. "I want to improve most on getting the bottom part of my body to reach the height that I can jump," Edison said after being asked about areas of improvement. "Because if I could do that I could definitely get a couple more inches higher." As Edison continues her hard work and improvement, she also recognized the moment. "Receiving the medal at the Goshen relays felt like an honor knowing that I was able to out jump so many other competitors. It was definitely a great feeling." LaVille returns to Lancer Field on April 23 for a triangular meet with Michigan City Marquette and Winamac. Field events are scheduled for 6 p.m. 34TH GOSHEN GIRLS RELAYS At Foreman Field, Goshen, IN.
