LAKEVILLE - Whenever a coach can get solid pitching, it goes a long way toward their team playing a competitive game. On Thursday, pitching and some timely hitting helped LaVille pick up a 2-0 Hoosier North victory over visiting Caston In fact, LaVille starting pitcher Lucas Plummer got off to a strong start. Along his path through 24 batters, the 6'3" righty peppered the zone with his fastball and used the breaking ball effectively. As the game progressed toward the seventh inning, one could tell that coach Brian Lawler wanted to see his senior finish up with the complete game. Lawler also had a back-up warming up, just in case Plummer needed a little help to close it out. Leading 2-0 and starting the top of the 7th inning, Plummer walked the first batter, so Lawler and his coaching staff decided to go with Andrew Wolford. He was able to get the final three outs, two by strikeouts, to close the door on any Comet comeback. "Started with Lucas and his no-hit scoreless pitching for 6 innings," Lawler said of his starting pitcher. "He did a good job of getting ahead of hitters early and throwing the breaking pitch for strikes." Plummer struck out 11 batters, walking 5, and kept the Caston batters off-balance to pick up the victory. Wolford earned the save for LaVille. The two combined for the no-hitter against the Comets and teamed for 13 strikeouts and no runs. "It was a big confidence win," said Lawler, who watched his club remain atop the HNAC standings. "We just have to be ready for them tomorrow because they're a good team." LaVille got on the board in the second inning, when Braedyn Foster hit an RBI single to right-center field, scoring Andre Gonzales. Gonzales started the inning with a single to center field. Lawler's crew added another run in the third inning. Karson Quinn knocked Collin Czarnecki home after he drilled a single to center field. Czarnecki reached base on a single to right field, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. "It felt like we had chances to get a few more across home plate," concluded Lawler. "But we had big RBI hits from Foster and then Quinn that proved to be enough." LHS improves to 7-3 overall and 5-0 in HNAC play. Game two of the season series moves to Fulton, IN., April 26.
