SOUTH BEND - It's been Brooke Edison's goal all season. After finishing the 2023 Mishawaka Sectional in a three-way tie at 4-foot, 10-inches, Edison advanced to the Goshen Regional. Heading into the 2024 South Bend Saint Joseph Sectional, she was in familiar territory, tied as the top seed with Penn's Anna McCollough and Quinn Driscoll. Similar to several other athletes, Edison participated in running events Tuesday and returned to Father Bly Field at Leighton Stadium Wednesday due to Tuesday's weather. Edison finished first in high jump and Moriah Richhart closed out a third-place finish in the shot put as both advanced to the Kokomo Regional. Tuesday, Edison was able to be invested in the running events, while Wednesday she in turn concentrated on high jump. "Running for only one night made it easier to focus on just running Tuesday and focus on just high jump Wednesday," said Edison. "It was draining to have two long nights, but I guess it was all worth it." Edison has been working to improve her approach, technique, timing, and knee drive, just to name a few. Wednesday got to put all that hard work into action. With both Driscoll and Edison tied for first place, there was a jump-off to decide the sectional champion. The LaVille junior was able to clear the bar on her final jump during the jump-off to become the 2024 IHSAA Saint Joseph Sectional high jump champion. "I approached high jump knowing I wanted to win and I was seeded pretty high," explained Edison.  "But jumping is sometimes inconsistent so I was very nervous coming into the meet.  "Winning and reaching the 5-foot jump was so exciting. It was my third attempt and it came down to everything and knowing I was going up against big schools like Penn I felt a lot of pressure. Five feet has been my PR this year and I have gotten it two other times. But I approached it with confidence and focused on the things I missed the last couple jumps in order to make it over." After clearing the bar and realizing not only that she was the sectional champion, but that she also advanced to the 2024 Kokomo Regional on May 21. "Winning the sectional title means going to regionals which has been a goal for me all year," concluded Edison. "And knowing that I out jumped all of my opponents was very exciting."
