KOKOMO - As the IHSAA track and field state tournament moves to the regional level, LaVille's Brooke Edison and Moriah Richhart are about to load up and head south. The Kokomo Regional is set to host sectional survivors from Bremen, Kokomo, Mishawaka, and Warsaw Community. Edison is coming off winning the high jump title after clearing the bar on her final jump of the jump-off. "Winning and reaching the 5-foot jump was so exciting," Edison said after the meet. "It was my third attempt and it came down to everything and knowing I was going up against big schools like Penn I felt a lot of pressure. Five feet has been my PR this year and I have gotten it two other times. But I approached it with confidence and focused on the things I missed the last couple jumps in order to make it over." After clearing the bar and realizing not only that she was the sectional champion, but that she also advanced to the 2024 Kokomo Regional on May 21. "Winning the sectional title means going to regionals which has been a goal for me all year," concluded Edison. "And knowing that I out jumped all of my opponents was very exciting." Richhart joins Edison in Kokomo after improving her position during the sectional. She was seeded fourth heading into the meet and improved her seed distance to claw her way to the next level. It will be the second straight year for both Edison and Richhart at the regional. Edison finished a 4'-10" in the 2023 sectional and has improved that to 5'-0" in 2024. With a jump of 5'-0" a the sectional, Edison is in a 7-way tie as there are nine jumpers between 5' and 5'-1". The top two jumpers are from Concord and Columbia City at 5'1" "Today will be a hot one, but that is typically good for sprinters and jumpers, they can warm up and stay warm," LaVille coach Erin Ecker said about how the weather will affect the student-athletes. "That will be good for Brooke, hopefully she can hit a new PR and clear 5'1" or better, she's been so close, but her PR hasn't improved since (April 20) when she first cleared 5'. She's been working on cleaning up some techniques this week. If she can clear 5'1" she has a very good chance at advancing. There are two jumpers ahead of her with a 5'1" seed. She is in a seven-way tie for third place, so clean attempts will be important too." Richhart finished fourth last year in the sectional round and improved her placement heading into the 2024 regional. Her 36'-5.75" sectional toss puts her in the middle of the pack with an 8-seed. "Moriah is sitting mid-pack in shot put, only 3 feet separate her from 3rd place," Ecker said of the Lancer thrower. "She has also been working on cleaning up some techniques this week. If she can hit a new best today she has a good chance at advancing as well. It will be nice to have a dry ring for a change, that will be good for her footwork. Since discus throws first she will have some time to let the nerves build up and hope it will positively affect her throws." Admission will be $10.00 for kindergarten through adults. All tickets will be sold online using the link below. https://public.eventlink.com/tickets?t=81182 Eight places will be scored with the following points awarded to the appropriate placement: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 All awards are provided by the IHSAA.
