LAKEVILLE - LaVille played its second straight Northern Indiana Conference opponent when South Bend Riley visited Lakeville. The two teams battled in four very tight sets before the Lancers pulled away in the final game of the evening for a 3-1 win at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. Leading 2-1 headed to what turned into a thrilling finale, Riley and LaVille fought for each point every play. With each point keeping on the edge of their seats, the two clubs worked their way through 10 ties, including the final knotted score at 22-22. LHS jumped ahead 7-3 before Riley worked the count to 9-9 as a trio of Wildcat players kept the set close. Coach Pat Gring's squad took a 13-10 lead after net attacks by Ragen Wagoner and Faith Mejer. The latter also marked one of her team-leading five aces during the spurt. Riley, however, would not go away. Strong net play helped the 'Cats tie the score at 16, 17, and 19 as each team felt the excitement and played several long volleys for points. A crucial net attack by coach Warren Bynum's team led to a 22-21 RHS lead. That was until Wagoner, Olivia Markin, and Moriah Richhart clinched the match with kills that sent Gring's club to a hard-fought victory. Reagan Bollenbacher and Madi Singleton tied Mejer with the team-lead at 5 aces. Markin added 3 aces of her own as the Lancer service crew served up 22 total aces. Mejer also led LHS with 8 kills. Markin added 7, while Wagoner and Richhart chipped in with 6 of their own. The JV continues a strong start with a 2-0 victory over the Wildcats, sending their record to 6-0. Myleigh Tolbert led the service game with 6 aces, while Avery Lee added 4. Lorelai Carey was the top attacker with 6 kills and 2 blocks. LaVille (4-6 overall) will take a break from the schedule for the Labor Day weekend. The next Lancer match will be September 4 at Plymouth. The JV match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
