Allen, Special Teams, Defense Big In Road Victory

ALBION - For just the third time in LaVille football history, the Lancers faced off against Central Noble. After starting the season 0-2, coach Jeff Kaiser's club made some adjustments and were able to get the running going in a 27-0 victory over the Cougars. "I felt like our guys came out ready for the challenge ahead of them and wanted to get us in the win column against Central Noble," said Kaiser. "We wanted to get things going offensively right away - is why when we won the toss I wanted the ball." LaVille senior Cody Allen was the workhorse, carrying the ball 38 times for 194 yards and three touchdowns. Allen got the Lancers on the board first, closing up an 11-play, 73-yard drive for a touchdown. Collin Czarnecki added the point-after and the Lakeville guests led, 7-0. The plan on the first drive of the game was very obvious . . . give Allen the ball! Allen rushed 10 times for all 73 yards on the drive. Albeit an incomplete pass on a second down play, the rest was #24. "Our focus was getting points on the board all week and I wanted our guys to know I have trust in them and wanted to prove that in our opening drive," Kaiser explained. "We put the ball in our experienced RB's hands in Cody Allen and the line moved some people to allow us to stay in that mode of ground game." In the second quarter, the LHS special teams registered another big play. Facing a 4th and 1 on their own 46, Central Noble quarterback Brody Morgan found himself chasing a bad snap. As Morgan attempted to pick the ball up, it squirted out and into the waiting hands of Lancer senior Xzavian LaFave. LaFave scooped the ball up and took it the final 18 yards to the end zone for a touchdown. "Any time your special teams can score, it's a huge momentum change and a bonus to add to the other phases of the game," said the LaVille skipper. "We focus on special teams each week and now have 2 scores this season in that phase of the game." Last week, LaFave booked 70+ yards for a kickoff return for six. Now this week, the right place, right time, and right bounce helps LaFave register another big play. As the second half got under way, we noted that LaVille put junior quarterback Brayden Schwitz in to run the offense. No official word came until after the game was completed on the reason for the QB switch. "We had indications that Czarnecki wasn't feeling well, so between Janelle, our trainer, and myself we decided to not force any issues," Kaiser said when asked about the change at quarterback. "We turned to Brayden Schwitz immediately, without hesitation, and he ran the offense very well to secure the win. Next man up mentality is what we emphasize and that for sure was the case in this game." The score remained 14-0 through three quarters before Allen completed his trifecta of TD runs. He found his way in from the 12 and then was pushed the final couple yards by the Lancer offensive line to complete a 5-yard run. The LaVille defense had a different look against Central Noble. In the first two games, the opposition preferred to run the ball. Tonight, the Cougars put up 28 pass attempts, completing nine for 107 yards. The LHS defensive front limited Central Noble to minus-9 yards rushing and under 100 yards for the game. Konnor Amor picked off a Morton pass on the first possession of the second quarter. "Defensively we mixed things up with coverages which I felt our guys played very well and it kept them off balance offensively," noted Kaiser. "Our second half pressure by our D Line was huge and allowed us to win the field position battle. "Secondary-wise we were able to have 2 interceptions by Amor. But, unfortunately 1 in which he took back for 70 yards and a score was wiped off the board due to a penalty. This unit played well together and I felt like there were no blown coverages in this game." Defensively, Braedyn Foster and Jonathan Neese led the Lancers with eight tackles each. Konnor Amor had one interception officially, while Neese and Brock Gest added one tackle for loss each. Kaid Hernandez collected a pair of sacks, Amor the interception, and LaFave the fumble recovery for a TD. "Anytime you get a shutout it's an honor to our defense playing their role, knowing assignments and executing them as a full unit," concluded Kaiser when asked about how he felt the defense played. "Being able to move the ball offensively also helps this happen for field position. This shutout also allows the defense to trust schemes moving forward from week to week." LaVille (1-2) begins five straight weeks of Indiana Northern State Conference play when they travel to Bremen on September 13 for a 7 p.m. kick.
