LAKEVILLE - LaVille and John Glenn met to continue its high school volleyball rivalry on Thursday. The Lancers and Falcons were longtime Northern State Conference rivals until 2014. And although the conference rivalry changed for a few years, the neighborhood get-together did not. Now, as the 2024 season moves along, the two schools that are separated by approximately 11 miles down Highway 6, renewed the long-standing tradition as members of the Indiana Northern State Conference. The two teams battled for three sets, with the Lancers falling 3-0 to the Walkerton guests. Early on, LaVille came out with energy, strong serving, and finding open areas in the John Glenn defense. In fact, the Lancers jumped to leads of 6-0 and 10-3 before the Falcons called a timeout. Coach Pat Gring's LaVille squad upped the ante to 13-6 in the first set, but the visitors rallied for 11 consecutive points to grab the lead. LHS fought to get within 20-18, but John Glenn tallied the final five points to win the first set. In the second set, the Falcons used a strong serving game and net attack to get a 15-0 jump-start. LaVille was unable to recover, and trailed 2-0 in the match. Both squads traded points and mini scoring runs in the third set. John Glenn led 11-7 until a 7-0 spurt helped the Falcons pull away for the win. LaVille (5-12 overall and 1-4 INSC) will continue its run of six straight conference matches at Jimtown on September 24. The junior varsity match will serve at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity to follow. Jimtown visited LaVille on September 5, with the Jimmies taking a 3-1 decision. The new INSC criteria has volleyball playing a home-and-home series during the regular season.
