LAKEVILLE - It was a tale of two halves during Friday's high school football game between Tippecanoe Valley and LaVille in Indiana Northern State Conference action. The Lancers found success early - both offensively and defensively - only to have the Vikings find their rushing attack in the second half as Valley upended LaVille 32-21 at Lancer Field. "Yeah unfortunately in the second half we got a little fatigued and Valley made the adjustments they needed to," said LaVille head coach Jeff Kaiser. "We couldn't make the right adjustments to stop the counter." It was the first meeting since 1981 between the two schools. LaVille won the toss and elected to receive the football to start the first half. The trio of Collin Czarnecki, Cody Allen, and Xzavian LaFave helped LHS on a 7-play, 78 yard drive to paydirt. The final 51 yards came on a strike from Czarnecki to LaFave. The latter took the ball the final 12 yards after breaking a tackle to cross the goal line. Czarnecki added the point-after and the hosts led, 7-0. The two teams traded a couple scores in the second quarter. Grady Moriarty found the end zone on a 36 yard run to tie the game, before Allen stepped in front of a would-be pass and took the ball to the house from 55 yards. Overbey then booted a 37-yard field goal for the Vikings as the second quarter ended to make the score LaVille 14, Valley 10. In what turned out to be a key play in the game, LaVille hopped on a Vikings fumble at the 20 and great field position to put another score on the board. Coach Jeff Kaiser's club pushed the ball inside the 1, but was unable to convert on a pair of plays. "Anytime you force a turnover you need to capitalize and turn it into points," explained Kaiser. "Unfortunately we were able to get to the 1 yard line and couldn't finish with 6. If we do it turns into a mental battle for Valley so being able to score that second TD early would have been huge." In the second half, things started off well for LaVille, holding Tippecanoe Valley on downs at their own 35. The Lancers drove the ball 35 yards on five plays for the touchdown. The big play in the series was a huge 25-yard pass from Czarnecki to LaFave for a first down at the Valley 4. Allen took the ball the final two yards to put Kaiser's crew ahead 21-10 with 7:03 left in the third quarter. The Vikings narrowed the gap to 21-18 after Wes Parker raced 31 yards to the end zone to close out a brief 78-yard drive. Moriarty forced his way into the end zone on the 2-point conversion as Valley got within three points. In the final quarter, Valley got two big touchdown runs by Moriarty of 65 and 63 yards to put the game away. "They were able to beat us with our own aggression which took away proper angles by biting on the misdirection plays," said the LaVille skipper. "If we could have stopped that, I feel we would have liked the outcome." Moriarty was tough running the ball, finishing with 173 yards. Parker added 132 as TV racked up 436 yards rushing. For the Lancers, Czarnecki was 10 of 15 through the air for 170 yards and a TD. LaFave hauled down 5 catches for 120 yards and a score. Tippecanoe Valley improves to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the INSC. "Difference in the game is they wore us down and were able to use multiple RB's to do so," concluded Kaiser. "(They were able to) keep fresh legs going." LaVille moves to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the INSC. The Lancers will travel to Knox on September 27 for another INSC game.
