LAKEVILLE - The girls soccer team played host to West Noble in a non-conference match. Both teams battled the entire match until Mikalah Kuskye took a pass from Brooke Edison to send LaVille to a 3-2 victory over the Chargers at Newton Park. Trailing 2-1, West Noble tied the match at 2-all when Silvia Venturi found the back of the net in the 76th minute That seemed to ignite a spark in the Lancers. The passes got crisper, the defense tougher, and the play more focused. In fact, Kuskye played lead sniper, stealing a pass near midfield. She quickly pushed the ball toward the West Noble goal, then found Edison on the right wing. As Kuskye continued her path toward the goal, Edison delivered a soft pass just ahead of Kuskye. Charger goalie Macie Miller tried to attack the play to shorten the distance between herself and Kuskye, but the LaVille senior connected on a one-hop shot that beat Miller and into the goal for what was the game-winner. Overall, LaVille did not get many shots on target, but made the most of the ones they did get. Edison, Kuskye, and Mackena Deason scored for the Lancers, with a little help from their friends. Kuskye, Edison, and Macie Edwards each added assists. The Chargers record may not indicate the overall talent of their team. LaVille coach Kevin Christy was quick to credit the Ligonier guests. "I told the kids after the match that they are the best team we've faced," said the Lancer coach. "In this game against West Noble, it was a battle back and forth. We bend, we don't break. We kept fighting. We didn't quit. We've had a few games (this season) where we have had to be gutsy and this was one of them." Christy's club closes the regular season at 9-6 overall. According to coach Christy, LaVille will be able to take a couple days off, but also to prepare for Argos in the bye match of the 1A Argos Sectional on October 10.
