Defense Steps Up As Football Wins Seventh Straight Over John Glenn

LAKEVILLE - In what LaVille head football coach Jeff Kaiser deemed a must-win, the Lancer defense stepped up to fend off rival John Glenn 17-7 at Lancer Field. Kaiser's defensive unit held the Falcons scoreless and 152 total yards of offense for the game. It was the first LaVille shutout of John Glenn since a 28-0 victory on September 8, 1995, and seventh straight win in the series. "Defensively we played very solid assignment football as a unit and were able to prevent them from getting in the end zone," said Kaiser after the game. "We got the job done." LaVille got on the board late in the first quarter after Cole Stafford stepped in front of a John Glenn pass. The Lancers went 50 yards in four plays as Cody Allen took the ball over from the one. Collin Czarnecki added the point-after as LHS took a 7-0 lead. A couple of key plays during the TD scoring drive came on pass interference call against the Falcons and a 34-yard completion from Czarnecki to Konnor Amor to the 1 before Allen's score. That early lead was short-lived as John Glenn's Brody King took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards and the Falcons were on the board. AJ Putchio added the PAT to tie the game at 7-all. "Cole Stafford getting the early INT that set up a score really got things going for us in a tight back and forth battle," said Kaiser. "Then Czarnecki being able to scramble and get the ball to Konnor Amor to keep a drive going was definitely a play we needed to happen." After exchanging punts, a blocked John Glenn punt by Braedyn Foster, and an interception by the Falcons, Kaiser's club got one final chance in the final 1:09 before halftime. Starting at their own 39, Czarnecki and the Lancer offense went right to work. A completion by Czarnecki of 20 yards to Amor got LaVille into John Glenn territory. Then a 18-yard pitch and catch from the Lancer quarterback to Brayden Schwitz pushed LaVille near the red zone. Three plays later, Kaiser's bunch faced a 4th down at the Falcon 27. Kaiser called upon Czarnecki and the field goal unit to put points on the board before halftime. The snap, hold, and kick were all true as the Lancer kicker converted the 41 yard effort, giving LaVille a 10-7 halftime advantage. "Our defense gave us an opportunity late in the first half for our offense to run our 2 minute drill, and they did a very nice job doing so," Kaiser said when asked how important Czarnecki's field goal was at the end of the second quarter. "With a tie game that was going back and forth, points were hard to get so we knew if we could get a score that it would be huge on top of getting the ball to start the second half. All 3 phases of the game were executed late in the second quarter to ensure we got those points. Our kids managed that drive well." Neither offense managed much offense in the second half, as the defenses took over the game for the third and much of the fourth quarter. After a short John Glenn punt, LaVille extended its lead after just two running plays by Allen, the second coming off a 32-yard TD jaunt. Allen took the ball off the left side and, with the help of a block by Schwitz, was able to run away from the Falcons secondary. On the defensive side, several Lancers played a crucial part in the game. Foster led the defense with 17 tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, and a blocked punt. Xzavian LaFave collected 10 tackles, a sack and four tackles for loss. Jonathan Neese added 16 tackles, and Stafford chipped in with 11 tackles, a tackles for loss and the interception. "(Our guys) played like experienced players in a big game and stuck to the scheme and made plays when we needed them," said Kaiser. " Knowing the plan going in and executing it allowed them to make big stops on numerous plays." When asked about a difference from the first half to the second half, Kaiser explained, "Offensively our running game was just a block away on numerous plays in the first half and we knew if we stuck to the game plan and got the guys to understand how close we were to breaking one, that Cody Allen would get it done for us in which he did break a big one when needed to secure the win." The game was stopped at the 5:40 mark of the second quarter for an injury to John Glenn's Blake Wright. While Wright was being cared for, Kaiser spoke to the Lancers about the injury. "I told the guys that unfortunately it's part of the sport, and to that extent is not what you want at any level be it on your team or the opposing team," recalled Kaiser. "I told them that he is in the best hands and is going to be ok. We must lock in to the task at hand or we will let this game get out of hand because I knew the Glenn kids were going to play with a ton of emotion after having a key player go down. We responded very well and continued on with finishing business." Allen led the LaVille rushing attack with 93 yards on 16 carries and the two TDs. Czarnecki finished 6 of 15 for 83 yards and an interception. Amor was the top receiving target, catching two passes for 55 yards. LaVille improved to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in INSC play. The Lancers will play host to Jimtown on October 11. Kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. and LaVille will recognize members of the senior class and their parents from band, cheer, and football.
