LAKEVILLE - As the final seconds ticked off the regional semifinal match between 1A #7 Westview and LaVille, one thing was crystal clear. "They were resilient," said LaVille coach Kevin Christy after the Warriors defeated the Lancers 4-0 for the right to advance to the IHSAA regional finals. "They fought, they never quit ... all the way until 46-seconds or whatever it was (when Westview scored its fourth goal). You could see it on their faces. "This is a really good Westview team ... Really technically sound, pass, move. They are a great soccer team. We fought them. We really tried to stay with them. It's the best team we've played all year." Westview put pressure on the Lancer defense throughout the contest, yet LaVille held them scoreless for nearly the entire first half. Westview's offensive attack witnessed an early shot go off the crossbar. In the 16th minute, Lancer goalkeeper Denni Markin got her hands on a shot attempt that forced the ball to go off the crossbar instead of what could have been a goal. Later, LaVille defender Ava Barrett-Heaton made a hustle play to contain a breakaway near the 30th minute. The Warriors were finally able to crack the Lancer defense in the 3th minute when Kelsie Ward’s shot went over the outstretched hands of Markin and into the net. LaVille’s first shot on goal came at the 29th minute by Mikalah Kuskye just outside the 18, but Westview keeper Breann Cory logged the save. The Lancers next kick came via a boot by Ava Barrett-Heaton, only to be short-hopped by Cory for keeper save. Other than those couple of shots, the LHS offense was held back. Westview did open the second half with a pair of goals in the first 12 minutes, then a final tally in the match's final minute of play. If not for some outstanding defensive hustle, team play, and fine saves by Markin in goal, the margin could have been wider. Westview's solid passing and advancement of the ball kept LaVille on their toes for much of the match. "We are super pleased," Christy said of the team defense. "We talked with the girls about how defiant we were and it is unfortunate the way it has to end." When asked about his seniors after the match, Christy said, "It's a special group. We talked about that after the match. You got all these ball girls running after balls on the sidelines, all the little girls in the stands, the sisters and the cousins ... What the seniors did was build a legacy for the future. They are out there practicing for the future. These young girls know the high school girls by name. They are following them and for me that is the important part is the legacy they are leaving. The 11-win season, the sectional title, it is important stuff for the future of the program. That is what we are looking for. Always building for the future." As we finished our time, Christy shared some final thoughts, "I told them that it was an honor ... first year coming in ... they didn't know what to expect of me. I knew what we were trying to get out of them and I would say they over-delivered. Super proud of their effort ... we only had 15 (players) and that is from every single one of them. They put out everything they had. Super proud of the season we had, don't love how it finished, but a complete honor to coach these seniors." LaVille closed the season with an 11-7 overall record and a sectional title. LHS will graudate seniors Mackena Deason, Brooke Edison, Ava Barrett-Heaton, Reagan Mitchell, Mikalah Kuskye, and Sydnee Miller. 1A IHSAA GIRLS SOCCER STATE TOURNAMENT LaVille Regional Semifinal At Newton Park, Lakeville, IN.
