LAKEVILLE - LaVille showed what getting a brother back in the fold can do for the team. Coach Jeff Kaiser's club utilized a strong running game to go with a complimentary passing attack en route to a 41-6 victory over West Central. It was one of four opening round games of the IHSAA 1A Sectional #41 state tournament. The Lancers welcomed back Cody Allen, who missed the final two weeks of the season due to a medical procedure, as LHS looked to move forward in the Class 1A state football tournament. For the exception of the opening kickoff, LaVille played shut down football. Kaiser's team played shutout football on defense, while limiting the Trojan running game to 50 yards and their total offense to just over 100 yards for the game. "Getting Cody back is huge," said Kaiser after the game. "Not only with his on-field performance, but his leadership, big game experience and the energy it brought to the team having one of our seniors back playing again. He played well and looked like he hasn't missed a beat which we will need him to continue to do here in the tournament for us to have continued success. "Defensively we played well as a unit and understood what West Central was wanting to do. I like how our guys played assignment football and didnt get over aggressive to take themselves out of plays. The last few weeks I felt we have played as a unit and not as individuals." After West Central speedster Felipe Bazan took the opening kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown, LaVille had to adjust and get to work. Allen started his return effort by running the ball six times during a nine-play drive that was finished by Allen's 3-yard TD. Collin Czarnecki came on to add the point-after. He finished with a career-high 245 yards on 31 carries and two touchdowns. During Allen's absence the last two weeks, Cole Stafford stepped in and was quite effective. Stafford gave the Lancer rushing attack a solid 1-2 punch against West Central as he teamed with Allen for nearly 310 rushing yards. Stafford also added a running touchdown to go with a TD reception. "The 1-2 punch of Allen and Stafford is a blessing to have," Kaiser said when asked about the Lancer duo. "Cole stepped in and did some nice things while Cody was out. He needed that success mentally as well as his teammates for the trust. They compliment each other so well and its 2 different styles of running so that will be something that our opponents will have to adjust to. We will not hesitate giving the ball to either one of them at this point. They both have made that possible." Czarnecki also continued the pass threat by tossing a trio of TD passes. The 6-foot, 3-inch senior signal-caller connected with Brayden Schwitz, Xzavian LaFave and Stafford. Continuing their work in the trenches, the offensive line opened holes for the running game, and provided protection for the passing game. "The OLine played well and were able to open holes up for our RB's but also were able to give Czarnecki time to throw the ball," explained Kaiser. "To continue our success we have to win the battles in the trenches. Anytime and no matter who you're playing, if you can't get the running game going you're going to be in trouble. That sets the tone for sure." Defensively, Braedyn Foster led a balanced effort with 11 tackles, while Schwitz added seven. The Blue Crew defense also collected eight tackles for loss and combined for three turnovers. LaFave and Keenan Richhart led with 3 TFLs each. Czarnecki picked off a pair of West Central passes, Eli Platz had a caused fumble, and Richhart a fumble recovery. "I felt early on we played flat and not with a sense of urgency but were able to change that mindset and get after it in the second half," said Kaiser. "To say the least we are glad to be playing another week and extending our season!" LaVille evened its overall record at 5-5 and will play host to North Newton (3-7) in the 1A Sectional #41 semifinal. Kick is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET at Lancer Field, Lakeville, IN.
