LAKEVILLE - LaVille showed off its passing game and running game, while the defense dug deep as the Lancers shutout North Newton 49-0 at Lancer Field. It was the IHSAA Class 1A Sectional #41 semifinal. Coach Jeff Kaiser's squad used the running attack of Cody Allen, Cole Stafford and Jonathan Neese to collect over 220 yards on the ground. The Lancers were also getting the job done through the air, as Collin Czarnecki connected for 161 yards and a pair of touchdown passes. The highlight of the passing game came on a first down play inside 30-seconds left on the second quarter clock. Kaiser's crew led 28-0 and wanted to put another score on the board. Facing a 1st and 10 at the half-yard-line following the goal line stop, Czarnecki was able to find Xzavian LaFave for a piece of LaVille Football history. LaFave found a hole in the North Newton defense at about the 12, secured the catch, then outran everyone for a school-record 99 yard TD catch. LaFave caught three passes for 139 yards and two TDs. "We wanted to score again before halftime to go up 35 and get the running clock to start the second half," Kaiser noted when asked about the Lancer plan just before half. "Backed up on our half yard line, there was no hesitation on passing the ball. We work our passing segments daily, so in this situation our Offense was ready for it. On top of that Czarnecki and LaFave have a solid connection, are senior leaders and executed it to perfection ... Czar stayed in the pocket - trusting his line - and got the ball to Xzavian and we watched him do something special. That play was fun for everyone!" To lead the rushing attack, Allen was on the receiving end of some fine blocking by his offensive line and rushed 10 times for 134 yards, sending him over 1,000 yards for the second straight season. He finished with three TDs on the night. "Cody Allen and Cole Stafford have developed into a solid 1-2 punch for our offense and compliment each other very well," explained Kaiser. "The improvement of our line and schemes have allowed those two guys to get going. Then we can go with a bigger package by putting Jonathan Neese in as a change of pace style. If you get your running game going, it opens up so many options." On the defensive side, LaVille picked off two Spartan passes, one returned 30 yards to the house on a pick-six by Neese. The Lancers also secured a fumble recovery by Keenan Richhart and stopped North Newton power runner Hunter Crabtree inside the one yard line as the Spartans looked to score. "Anytime you have a goal line stand it sends a message to the other team that we aren't going to break and let you score," Kaiser said when asked about the goal line stand right before halftime. "Our defense played those few plays fundamentally sound. read their keys, stayed low and tackled legs as a unit. A real momentum breaker as well due to the fact it was almost halftime which would have allowed them to start believing in what they were doing for the next 24 minutes, so very important in many ways for our guys to keep them out of the end zone." The Blue Crew defense held North Newton's offense to one yard rushing and less than 60 total yards for the game. "Defensively we wanted to play physically and with emotion," said Kaiser. "When you do this constantly, you are able to create those big plays, create turnovers, cause havoc to your opponent and feed off each other. We felt we could dominate them and we did just that." Following the win, Kaiser and the Lancers now prepare to play in the IHSAA sectional finals. "It's championship week!," said the third-year Lancer boss. "Anytime you are playing into November you're playing for hardware. We are excited to get another opportunity to show our improvement as a team since week 2 and I can't think of a better way than with a chance at extending our season and getting some hardware while doing it. "We hope all of Lancer Nation has plans to be with us on Friday Night!!" In the other semifinal, North Judson-San Pierre defeated Culver Community, 58-0. LaVille improves to 6-5 overall and will face 1A No.1-rated North Judson-San Pierre (11-0) on November 8 for the Sectional #41 championship. It will be a rematch of the week two regular season won by the Blue Jays, 32-8.
