WESTVILLE - After a back and forth battle for much of the game, LaVille turned up the defensive pressure and executed offensively en route to a 55-47 high school basketball victory at Westville. The two squads got off to a quick start as LaVille's Collin Czarnecki and Westville's Brian Jackson led their respective teams.Czarnecki netted 16 of his game-high 32 points in the first half, while Jackson canned all of his team-high 21 points as Westville took a 32-31 lead into the halftime locker room. The LaVille senior guard maintained a consistent offense in the third quarter, converting 11 of the Lancers 13 points in the period as the Lakeville guests took a 44-43 lead into the final quarter. The final eight minutes, however, were a marked difference as LHS limited the hosts to just four total points on one of seven field goal shooting and six turnovers. Czarnecki pushed LaVille to a 49-43 lead after hitting a 3-pointer and a 15-foot jumper on back-to-back possessions. Westville's Dillon Walpole connected on a trey to narrow the Lancer lead to 51-46 with 2:40 remaining, but LaVille's defense held the Blackhawks to a single point the rest of the way.  The Lancers hit a couple of free throws for the final margin. Though it was the season-opener for the Lancers and Westville was competing in their third matchup of the young season, LaVille head coach Michael Edison was pleased with his club's play, all things considered. "Westville had already had a scrimmage and had already played a couple nights before our game," the Lancer coach explained. "Having a couple competitions under your belt helps at the beginning of the year. Since this was our first competition against another team, I was very pleased with the way we handled ourselves. In the 12 or 13 practices that we have had so far there were probably only three practices where we have had 10 players to where we could go five on five.  I really didn't know what to expect.  There are definitely things we need to improve upon, but our guys found a way to contain number 22, Jackson, and we were able to pull out the win." Edison was also pleased with the adjustments his team made against Jackson and the Blackhawks in the second half and the way his team executed in critical possessions. "Jackson had over 20 points in the first half and barely scored in the second half," said Edison.  "This was definitely a big key to our success. We also stopped them in the fourth quarter and only allowed them to score 4 points. Czarnecki was able to knock down some key shots for us at crucial times to help us extend the lead and maintain control of the game." When asked about Czarnecki's consistent game scoring, Edison said, "Collin's 32 points really helped us keep control of the game.  He did a nice job at the free throw line, rebounding for us, and making some good passes throughout the entire game. He had a very solid game!" Lance Edison added 11 points, including seven in the first quarter, to go with nine rebounds, while Andre Gonzales chipped in with six points, five steals, and four rebounds for LaVille. Czarnecki also hauled in nine boards. LHS had 16 assists for 21 field goals - Edison and Gonzales led seven players that handed out assists, with four each. LaVille (1-0) will travel to Westview (1-0) on Dec. 3.   The JV game is set for a 6pm tip, with the varsity to follow. The Warriors defeated Bethany Christian, 76-55, and will play host to Northridge on Nov. 30.
