GAMEDAY: Basketball Travels To #11 Jimtown For INSC Opener

BAUGO TOWNSHIP - It's been nine years since LaVille and Jimtown have met on the basketball court. The last meeting between the two longtime Northern State Conference rivals ended up going to overtime, with the Jimmies coming away with a 66-64 victory at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. And the players on both teams were still in grade school the last time the two schools met. Back then it was a big game. LaVille finished 2015 with a 21-7 overall record after winning the IHSAA sectional. Jimtown, meanwhile, closed at 16-7, losing to South Bend Saint Joseph in the first game of the IHSAA sectional. Today's GAMEDAY has a similar big game feeling, with Jimtown coming in at 2-0 and ranked No. 11 in the latest Class 2A poll. Jimtown is coming off a 76-36 victory against Career Academy South Bend on December 3. LaVille is 1-1 after a 67-41 setback Tuesday at #19 Westview. This will be the third straight road game for the Lancers after a 55-47 win at Westville to open the season. "Jimtown is another very solid team," LaVille head coach Michael Edison said of the Jimmies. "I think they are one of the best teams in our conference. They have three very high level players on their team and two or three others that are excellent role players. They will mix up their defense and run a 3-2 zone, man-to-man, and a 1-2-2 1/2 court trap. They will also run some full court press. On offense, they like to break another team down off of the dribble and they do a very good job at that. They have about four or five players that are very capable of getting over 10 points a game." Coach Tyler Leighton's team is led by 6'7" senior Branden King's 28.0 points per game and 14.0 rebounds per outing. Senior Dylan Fey adds 21.0 ppg and 7.0 rpg and 6'0" classmate Javen Jackson kicks in 14.o ppg, 5.0 rpg and 4.5 assists a game. Will Spurgeon, a 5'11" junior, adds 12.0 ppg and 3.0 assists per game. "Fey had probably close to 30 points against Prairie Heights," explained Edison. "He can rebound extremely well, and he is a great passer. Against Career Academy, King had 28 points in 14 rebounds. Also, in that game, Jackson had 16 points, five assists, and five rebounds. Spurgeon is shooting about 50% from three-point range. They have a lot of pieces to the puzzle and are definitely very well rounded. They will be very tough to contain!" Edison's club has been led by senior Collin Czarnecki (25.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg and 3.0 steals), along with Andre Gonzales (7.5 ppg, 3.0 assists) and Lance Edison (7.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 3.0 assists). Friday's game will also be the INSC opener for both teams and the Sports Michiana 'Game of the Week'. We asked coach Edison about the INSC schedule and if there is a favorite to win the league title. "The INSC is going to be a very competitive conference," said Edison. "All of the teams are going to be solid and we are going to have to play well every night to get a win. In my mind there are several teams that look good on paper, but we will see how the first few games go before making my decision. Each team has some really good strengths and it will be fun to play against all of these very well coached teams. "It has been a long time since we played the Jimmies!" said the LaVille skipper when asked about Friday's game. "For you and I it used to be common place to play them. There were a number of years where we had sectionals over at their place. We have scrimmaged at their place a couple times over the last five years, but nothing with this type of significance. I am hoping we have the right focus to compete for four quarters and have a chance at the end of the game." There are plenty of places to watch!
