Basketball Beats Hebron For Holiday Tourney Title

HEBRON - LaVille head basketball coach Michael Edison has been preparing his team for a team to play zone defense. Saturday's Hebron holiday tournament championship game against the host Hawks was the ideal time for the Lancers to work on what they have learned in practice. Edison's club managed the zone offense quite effectively in picking up a 62-49 victory over Hebron to capture its first holiday tourney title since winning the Kankakee Valley holiday tournament in 2017. "We played pretty well against a solid Hebron team tonight," said Edison after watching his team improve to 5-3 overall. "In the first half they zoned us the entire time and I thought we executed many of our zone sets at a high-level. "A couple minutes into the third quarter. We stretched our six point halftime lead up to about 16 to 18 points. I looked up at the clock and I knew there was a lot of time left. Braedyn Foster got into a little bit of foul trouble a little later in the third quarter. Czarnecki went down hard on the floor and had to leave the game. We struggled for a little bit taking care of the ball and making good decisions and they made a run and cut it to about eight or nine points. We were able to hold on and finish the game strong." During that strong finish, LaVille senior Collin Czarnecki became the school's all-time leading scorer. Edison, who started the night within striking distance, eclipsed Blake Berger's from the 2014-15 season. There will be more on Czarnecki's accomplishment in a separate story complete with comments from the LaVille senior and coach Edison. Check back on www.lavillelancers.com and other social media outlets. Saturday after the Lancers grabbed a 47-29 lead, Hebron made one final run. The Hawks mixed in a couple 3-pointers to go with a couple buckets inside the paint and a couple of free throws to narrow the lead to nine points. But Edison's crew regained their footing as Czarnecki found Andre Gonzales on a half-court pass that resulted in an old-fashioned 3-point play. On the next possession, Braedyn Foster drove the right side for a bucket and the Lancer lead never got below double digits. "It was a total team effort in our victory tonight," Edison said when asked about his team's effort and back-to-back victories. "I think it gives the guys a little bit of added confidence going into the new year. Winning games tends to do that. Sometimes it can be a false confidence as a team is only as good as their next performance. We need to stay hungry and make sure we always respect all of our opponents, but realize that we can compete with anyone we play with proper execution." Czarnecki finished with a game-high 26 points, led the Lancers with four steals and was a co-leader with six rebounds. Foster added a career-high 15 points and six boards. Edison chipped in 11 points and also hauled down six carombs. LaVille will return to action on January 4 against North Judson-San Pierre. The non-conference game is set for a 6 pm junior varsity tip. The varsity will follow.
