MISHAWAKA - A total of 259 teams participated in the first-ever Indiana High School Athletic Association girls wrestling tournament. Among those were LaVille juniors Myleigh Tolbert and Alyvia Wickizer at the Mishawaka Sectional. Tolbert opened the 135-pound competition with a pin, closing out Naomi Heard of South Bend Adams by fall in 24-seconds.  The Lancer junior then battled Triton's Rilee Bemish before succumbing at the 4:25 mark of the match. She then worked her way back through the wrestleback round, winning by fall in three straight rounds to finish third overall.  In the third-place match, Tolbert came up with a fall in 4:17 over Mishawaka my Angel Jackson to advance to the IHSAA Goshen Regional. Wickizer competed in the 105lb class.  She opened against Jaden Eskew of Plymouth by fall before gaining a forfeit to push her along in the wrestleback stage.  In her crucial placement match, Wickizer came up with a fall at 2:08 of the match over Mishawaka's Claire Powell as she punched her ticket to the IHSAA regional at Goshen. "First of all I just want to say thank you to everyone who has been supporting me through this journey," said Wickizer.  "I wouldn't be in the position I am today without everyone.  "During my first match at sectionals against Plymouth, I got really spastice and got put in a bad position, and it got in my head at first but then I remember that I could wrestle back to still make it to regionals. After my forfeited match I had a match against Mishawaka. This was the match that determined if I made it to regionals or not. During this match I was doing good and I got in a bad position and I was down on my hands and knees and I looked up at my coaches and saw their faces and I knew that I had to get up from the bottom so I did as fast as I could.  Being able to say I get to proceed onto regionals again this year makes me feel amazing, it makes me feel like all the hard work is starting to actually pay off. I also want to say congratulations to Myleigh Tolbert on making it onto regionals this year as well." The first IHSAA girls high school girls wrestling state tournament began with 16 sectionals across Indiana on January 3.  Penn won the Mishawaka Sectional team championship.  The Lancers finished 12th out of 15 teams. The top four individuals in each weight class advance to the Goshen Regionals Friday, Jan. 10 beginning at 10am ET.  The top four wrestlers in each weight class from the regional level will advance to the January 17 state.
