LAKEVILLE - Both teams are known for their defensive prowess, with Triton and LaVille ranked in the Top 50 in Indiana, regardless of classification. The Class 2A #18 Trojans paid a visit to Lakeville with nothing but good old-fashioned small-school school basketball, and some rivalry bragging rights on the line. Splitting the last 10 games in the series, Triton and LaVille had both won 5 of their last 6 games and both had put together a string of victories and carried a little bit of momentum. At times during a true defensive battle Tuesday inside Dale E. Cox Gymnasium, the atmosphere had members of Trojan Nation and Lancer Nation standing cheering or on the edge of their seats. Triton led 9-8 at the end of one quarter, but the score was tied at 22-22 at halftime, and again at 29-all heading into the final eight minutes of regulation. In the end, Triton made a few more plays down the stretch as the Trojans rallied for a 49-48 decision over the Lancers. The Trojans improved to 7-1 overall, while LaVille moved to 6-4 so far this season.Early in the fourth quarter, LaVille spread the scoring out, with five players helping coach Michael Edison's club gain an 11-point advantage. With the score knotted at 29 to start the fourth quarter, five different Lancers scored as LaVille put up 11 straight points in just over three minutes. Collin Czarnecki, Avery Garrett, Lance Edison, Andre Gonzales and Braedyn Foster all contributed to push the Lancer lead to 40-29 at the midway point of the final stanza. Over the final minutes of the game, Triton was able to force a couple of turnovers and hit two huge 3-point buckets to turn the tide. With LaVille leading 48-47 and under 10 seconds left, Trojan guard Julian Swanson knocked down a jumper to take the lead. LaVille called a quick timeout to set up a full-court play. On the inbound pass, Czarnecki dialed in a one-hop pass completion to Foster in the near court and LHS called another timeout with 5.7 seconds left. Lance Edison got the inbound pass to Czarnecki, who flipped it back to Edison looping around to the top of the key. Edison drove hard to the basket, but Swanson cut him off, forcing Edison to kick it out to Gonzales on the wing. Gonzales put up his left-handed jumper that barely missed, rolling around the rim, off the glass and away to Triton's rebound as the final horn sounded. "Triton made more big plays down the stretch than we did," said a disappointed Lancer boss. "There were a number of plays if we could have executed better on without turning the ball over or giving up unearned baskets that there probably would have been a different outcome." When asked about the final play, Edison said, "... we ran one of our late game side out of bounds plays that gave us a few different options." In that final fateful possession, Czarnecki, Edison and Gonzales touched the ball in the last 5.7 seconds so the options were definitely available. "The game basically came down to one key play, and even though we did a lot of good things throughout the game," Edison summed up. "Triton had one more key play than we did in the game."
