BREMEN - In a game that produced several big scoring runs, 42 total fouls and 42 free throws, Bremen made the biggest run in the end to come away with a 65-60 victory over LaVille. The Lions started off hot thanks in part to Chase Devine's 15 first-quarter points helped Bremen get off to a 24-14 lead. With the game being played at a quick pace, the overall activity produced several whistles.  In fact, Both teams registered five fouls each in each of the first two quarters, forcing both coaches to call on their respective benches.  Saddled with foul trouble, Bremen's Maddux Hickmant, Hartley Mitole and Bryce Miller, along with LaVille's Braedyn Foster, Lance Edison and Andre Gonzales each took their turn on the sidelines. LaVille was, however, able to reverse its fortunes in the second quarter. LHS went on a 13-0 run to regain the lead, before taking a 31-26 lead headed into the halftime locker room.  Collin Czarnecki scored 11 of his team-high 30 points to aid the Lancer cause. When both teams returned to the floor, it was Gonzalez who sparked the offense, helping LaVille to a 10-point during the third period.   Bremen, however, found a groove that helped close the margin to a LaVille 47-45 lead as the quarter came to a close.  A pair of old-fashioned 3-point plays by Maddux Hickman and Devine, followed by Devine’s fourth 3 of the game ignited another Lions run. As the fourth stanza got under way, the teams traded leads until the midway point of the period.  Czarnecki splashed a long triple to give LHS a 54-53 lead with 4:21 remaining. Following Czarnecki's trey, Devine got a skip pass to the left wing, took one dribble toward the baseline and Lance Edison came across with high-hands, with the official calling a foul on the 3-point attempt. LaVille coach Michael Edison felt the play was a flop by Devine - exhibited the play for the officials - and was assessed a technical foul.  Devine made two of the three free throws from the foul, then proceeded to sink the two technical free throws.  Following a Lancer turnover, Jack Wildauer converted another old-fashioned 3-point play and the lead was 60-54. The Lancers never gave up, getting eight possessions in the final three minutes.  LHS had a turnover and four straight missed field goals before Czarnecki hit a runner in the lane, then drained a long range jumper for a 3-pointer and a late free throw as Bremen held off LaVille. "The game against Bremen definitely had a lot of runs by both teams," said Lancer coach Michael Edison.  "We couldn't stop Chase Devine as he had over 30 points.  Both teams played very hard, but in the end, they just made a few more plays than us." When asked about the performance by Czarnecki and Devine, Edison said, "Both Collin and Chase played extremely well. Both players are tough to stop. We have a chance of possibly playing Bremen two more times this year. They are a very solid team and in order to beat them, we would have to execute very well on both ends of the court." Edison's club has a few days to practice before traveling to Elkhart Christian Academy on January 18.  It will be a triple-header for LaVille, with the girls and boys playing ECA in a non-conference game. The girls junior varsity starts at 4pm, with the varsity girls and JV boys tipping in separate gyms at 5:30pm and the varsity boys tipping at 7pm.
