LAKEVILLE - Be it at home or on the road, getting off to a good start is always crucial. For LaVille, the duo Andre Gonzales and Lance Edison helped the Lancers out of the gate, then Collin Czarnecki kicked his game into high gear, and the rest of the team finished it up. Coach Michael Edison's club opened a 21-11 lead and turned that into a 64-37 Everwise Bi-County basketball tournament victory Wednesday night at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. Andre and Lance scored 15 of their combined 19 points in the first quarter to get LHS off on the right foot. Czarnecki added six first period tallies before finishing with a game-high 24 points. A total of nine Lancers scored in the game to help set up a rematch with Bremen in the January 24 semifinals of the prestigious event. Bremen and LaVille fought it out just 14 days ago, with the Lions sneaking away with a 65-60 victory. While LaVille was adding scoring depth to the game, the outside shooting picked up business. Coach Edison's crew converted a season-high 11 3-pointers and finished over 50-percent from long distance to hold its sixth opponent at 40 points or less this season. Gonzales finished the game with 10 points, Lance Edison 9 and Travis Madondo 8 for LaVille. The Lancer bench outscored the Cougar bench, 19-13. On that January 10 visit to Bremen, there was a shootout between Czarnecki and Chase Devine. The Lancers new all-time leading scorer packaged up a 30 point effort, with Devine hitting for 32 tallies. That game that took place just shy of two weeks ago featured runs by both teams. Early on, Bremen found its way to a 24-14 lead thanks in part from a 15-point effort by Devine. The Lions guard picked up his third foul early in the second quarter as LaVille went on its own scoring burst to take a 31-26 halftime lead. Czarnecki fashioned an 11-point second quarter and had 19 points at intermission. As the fourth stanza got under way, the teams traded leads until the midway point of the period. Czarnecki splashed a long triple to give LHS a 54-53 lead with 4:21 remaining. Following Czarnecki's trey, Devine got a skip pass to the left wing, took one dribble toward the baseline and Lance Edison came across with high-hands, with the official calling a foul on the 3-point attempt. LaVille coach Michael Edison felt the play was a flop by Devine - exhibited the play for the officials - and was assessed a technical foul. Devine made two of the three free throws from the foul, then proceeded to sink the two technical free throws. Following a Lancer turnover, Jack Wildauer converted another old-fashioned 3-point play and the lead was 60-54. The Lancers never gave up, getting eight possessions in the final three minutes. LHS had a turnover and four straight missed field goals before Czarnecki hit a runner in the lane, then drained a long range jumper for a 3-pointer and a late free throw as Bremen held off LaVille. "The game against Bremen definitely had a lot of runs by both teams," said Lancer coach Michael Edison. "We couldn't stop Chase Devine as he had over 30 points. Both teams played very hard, but in the end, they just made a few more plays than us." When asked about the performance by Czarnecki and Devine, Edison said, "Both Collin and Chase played extremely well. Both players are tough to stop. We have a chance of possibly playing Bremen two more times this year. They are a very solid team and in order to beat them, we would have to execute very well on both ends of the court." Friday's game should be another thriller, this time with a berth in the Everwise Bi-County tournament championship on the line. Tip-off is scheduled for 8pm at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. 60th Everwise Bi-County Basketball Tournament LaVille 64, New Prairie 37 Score By Quarters New Prairie 11 19 27 37 LaVille 21 37 47 64 New Prairie - Dylan Bishop 4, Jagger Daniels 2, Cayden Mayfield 0, Griffen Ernst 0, Andrew Evers 7, Brody Wiginton 16, Isaac Fronk 6, Jayden Clemons 2.
