LAKEVILLE, IN. - LaVille's Faith Rock has been selected the Dale E. Cox Female Athlete of the Year for 2022. Rock participated in three sports - Cross Country, Basketball, and Track & Field - during her prep career and earned a total of 10 varsity letters. "LaVille athletics has taught me responsibility, and how hard work pays off," said Rock when asked what participating in athletics at LaVille had taught her. " There have been many early morning workouts that led to late night games or meets where I can really see improvement. All of my coaches were amazing and supportive of my crazy ideas and busy schedule. They always encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and stood by me even as I failed repeatedly. I could not have done nearly as much or as well without their dedication to my teams and I." Being a three-sport athlete means several opportunities to put on the Lancer uniform and represent not only yourself, but your team and your school. "I have always felt pride," said Rock. "LaVille often gets underestimated since we are a small school, and I loved showing up to run, play, or throw against a team to prove them wrong. We are a formidable school, and I like proving that small does not mean weak." It was Rock's way of displaying her pride and responsibility to wear a LaVille uniform. The opportunity to not only play for the school, but the community. It was a matter of "pride". When you are a three-sport athlete, people often wonder what your favorite sport is? "Each sport held a special place in me, but track was my favorite," explained Rock. "The variety in events meant I never was doing the same thing each practice, and never got tired of any one thing." Rock, who finished in the Top 10 of the Class of 2022 at LaVille, also kept busy with other extra-curricular activities. According to Rock, she was in Future Farmers of America, a National Honor Society officer, Math Bowl, Social Studies Quiz Bowl, 4-H, and board game club. When asked about the best advice she has been given, Rock said, "Actions speak louder than words. Do not worry about being the loudest voice on the court, or wonder what opponents think of you. Show up, do your job, and keep your head in the game - save the smack talk for later." The Indiana University Kokomo recruit for track and field appreciated being selected the 2022 Dale E. Cox Female Athlete of the Year. "I was very happy," said Rock. "It felt like I was getting the recognition of how much time and energy I devote to sports. I am always in a sport, and oftentimes doing workouts for one while in season of another one." Being involved with three sports, participating in practice, meets and games, we asked Rock if she had a most memorable moment. *Cross Country - "In cross country this year, we always ran to Pine Road pre-meet. It became our thing, and was something to look forward to and enjoy and just talk about random subjects since pre-meet is easy distance." *Basketball - "For basketball, it was breaking my finger this past season. I broke it early November, and had to adjust my shooting form in order to make any shots. The first few games after it were rough, but my coaches worked with me to get used to shooting differently, and I eventually got the hang of it. The thing I will remember most from it was my team supporting me even as I could not play at the top of my game." *Track and Field - "Winning the conference this year was huge to me. Freshman year we lost by 1/2 a point, COVID took our sophomore season where we would have dominated, and last year we lost by 5 points. We had our eyes set on winning the conference meet after having it dangled in front of us twice before. I had a great PR in discus that led to me winning that event. We won by a lot, and it was great." Just some of Rock's athletic accomplishments include: 2022 Hoosier North Athletic Conference Track and Field Discus Champion 2022 Hoosier North Athletic Conference Track and Field First-Team 2022 Hoosier North Athletic Conference All-Academic Team 2021 Hoosier North Athletic Conference All-Academic Team 2021 Indiana Coach of Girls Sports Association Academic All-State 2021 Indiana High School Athletic Association Regional Qualifier 2021 Hoosier North Athletic Conference Honorable Mention 2020 Indiana High School Athletic Association Regional Qualifier While attending Indiana University Kokomo, Rock plans to study Environmental Conservation and throw for the Track and Field team. Following her diploma collection from LaVille High School, Rock reminds all those student-athletes to, "Put in the extra workouts and early morning practices, because someday you will wake up and realize it is all over. You only get 4 years, so give it your all while you can before it is too late."
