SOUTH BEND - Coach Michael Edison knew his LaVille basketball team was in for Tuesday's opponent to play zone defense, limiting possessions and keep the game a low-scoring affair. As it turned out, both teams scored above their season average and combined to convert 18 3-point shots as the Lancers came away with a 59-46 victory at the Trinity Athletic Center. LHS started strong, opening a 20-9 lead to close the first quarter. Collin Czarnecki and Andre Gonzales snapped the twine as LaVille took control early. Trinity Greenlawn fought to stay within striking distance, outscoring the Lancers in the second period as LHS took a 30-23 lead into intermission. "They are well known for running their zone against teams and really try to limit possessions and keep the game low scoring," said the Lancer coach. "We knew it would be difficult to beat them, as they are extremely well coached, disciplined, and can really frustrate teams they play." LaVille increased its lead to double figures a couple times in the second half, but Trinity showed fight to trim the margin below 10 points. Czarnecki and Gonzales continued to lead a solid outside game, while Braedyn Foster stepped up to score six of his seven points in the final stanza and LHS was perfect from the free throw line to close out the game. "I thought Trinity played extremely well!" said coach Edison. "They shot the ball excellently from beyond the arc. We needed all of the shots we got because they were a resilient bunch and just didn't give up even though we got them down a few times by double digits." Czarnecki tallied a game-high 24 points, including four 3s. Gonzales added 15 points on five treys and Lance Edison chipped in with nine points. "We had several of our players that played a really good game," said the Lancer skipper. " They keyed on Collin Czarnecki early and Andre hit several three-pointers that were key to our success." Edison's bunch finished the regular season 15-8 overall, winning 4 of the 6 games and two straight. "It's nice to have a little momentum heading into the week of sectionals against a really solid Jimtown team," concluded Edison. "We will need to execute and shoot well in order to have a chance against them." The 115th IHSAA boys basketball state tournament begins on Tuesday, March 4. LaVille (15-8) will face the host Jimmies (12-10) in the 6pm opener. Winamac (14-8) meets Career Academy South Bend (1-21) at approximately 7:30pm.
