ELKHART - As we roll into March, that means it's time for Hoosier Hysteria in the state of Indiana. The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) opens its 115th edition this week at the sectional level around the state. A total of 403 teams are entered into the 2024-25 state basketball series. There are 81 teams in Class 4A, 101 in 3A, 100 in 2A and 121 in 1A. LaVille will participate in the IHSAA 2A Sectional #34 at Jimtown. And, some say this field of six teams is open for several to advance to the regional round. Coach Michael Edison's club will begin quarterfinal play at 6pm ET against the host Jimmies on Jerry Cook Court. The LaVille v Jimtown game can be watched via live stream by clicking https://www.ihsaatv.org/?B=2220014 Being conference foes, LaVille and Jimtown met back on December 6 in Baugo Township. JHS handled LHS, 50-34, Dylan Fey, Branden King and Will Spurgeon led the Jimmie offense, combining for 45 of the 50 points. Fey led all scorers with 22 points. For LaVille, Collin Czarnecki had 17 points to go with six rebounds, while Braedyn Foster chipped in with seven boards. "Jimtown went quite a number of games without one of their best players in Dylan Fey," noted coach Michael Edison. "They have had him the last couple of games and they are getting back to where they were at their best when they were clicking on all cylinders. They have a very tough schedule and during that tough stretch when Fey was out it opened up opportunities for younger players to get some valuable experience. They have a nice balance of size, speed, and shooting touch from the outside." When asked about Jimtown players to watch, Edison responded, " Dylan Fey is one of their best defenders and he is also one of their top offensive threats. He took it to us the first game on both ends of the court as he played very good defense on Collin Czarnecki. King is a 6'7" do it all player who can score inside or outside. He is very tough and has done a great job this entire season. Spurgeon is a gutty guard who is a very good shooter and plays with a lot of grit. (Javen) Jackson is their point guard and did not play the first time we played them as he had an ankle sprain. They have 3 or 4 others that will get quite a few minutes and are very capable as well." The Lancers have relied on senior guard Collin Czarnecki, who averages 25.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 1.8 assists per game. But several other players are key to LaVille's success. Cody Allen, Lance Edison, Braedyn Foster and Andre Gonzales add to the starting lineup, while Avery Garrett, Aaron Keb, Travis Madondo, Ryan Maenhout, and Jackson McNerney, add minutes off the bench. "Collin gets the opposing team's best defender and has really worked hard to get open, to move without the ball, and to be patient and let the game come to him," explained Edison. "We will rely heavily on him if we are to have a chance to beat the Jimmies on their homecourt. "Lance Edison and Andre Gonzales have both had good seasons for us. They have both stepped up both offensively and defensively and have improved throughout the season. They both give us other viable 3 point shooting threats as we head into the postseason. Braedyn Foster and Cody Allen have both been very solid defenders, and have done a good job screening and taking care of the ball. Travis Madondo, Avery Garrett, Jackson McNerney, Ryan Maenhout and Aaron Keb have all given us good minutes throughout the year. I have seen big improvements by all of them in different games during our season. They could all be counted on for big minutes as we get ready to play Jimtown." According to Michael Edison, "There is definitely a favorite team. Jimtown has the best record against everyone as they beat us, Knox and Bremen. We split in the year with Bremen and Knox did not have McLaughlin when they played us earlier in the year and have gotten much better. Winamac has a very good record, but did not play a lot of the sectional teams. CASB is always a scary team because they have a lot of talent and can put it together on any given night." Based on John Harrell's site, Jimtown is favored to pick up the sectional trophy, while the Sagarin Ratings gives LaVille a slight edge. Bremen and Winamac are picked third and fourth in line. Knox is followed by CASB on the Harrell link, though the two are switched according to Sagarin. "It should be a very good sectional tournament," closed LaVille skipper Michael Edison. Game on ...
