LAKEVILLE - LaVille smacked 10 hits on offense, while the Lancer pitching and defense allowed no runs and errors en route to a 10-0 non-conference victory at Newton Park. A trio Lancers collected two hits each, led by Brayden Schwitz, Sean Kubsch, and Lucas Underwood. Karson Quinn and Kubsch helped LHS get off to a quick start, cracking RBI singles as coach Brian Lawler's club got off to a 2-0 lead. Schwitz played a big role in the bottom of the fourth inning, collecting a couple RBIs following a double. Lawler's bunch took control of the contest in the bottom of the fourth. A hit batsman and three base on balls forced a run in before a 2 RBI double by Schwitz to left field. Quinn followed that up with a sacrifice fly as the Lakeville hosts moved ahead, 7-0. "The 5 run 4th was set up by some walks and then we got a big double from Brayden Schwitz," said Lawler, now in his 10th season at the helm of the LaVille baseball program. "And a nice sacrifice fly from Karson Quinn." The Lancers picked up two runs in the fifth on a Griffen Smith single. Kubsch added the game-ending 10th run on a hard single to left to end the game on the 10-run rule. While the offense had solid production, the LHS pitching tossed shutout baseball. Starter Andrew Wolford carved out five innings, 11 strikeouts, 0 walks in just over 50 pitches. Just one runner advanced to second base with Wolford on the mound and the lanky senior allowed a first inning single to Cole Hunt and fifth inning single to Jorge Murillo. Schwitz came on in the sixth to throw shutout baseball, striking out two. "The starting pitching was really strong," noted Lawler. "Andrew did a nice job of getting ahead while really throwing a lot of strikes, and getting through 5 innings without many pitches." LaVille, now 1-0, will be in action on April 4 at Mishawaka Marian and April 7 at Plymouth. A game has been added to the Lancer baseball schedule - April 8 at home against South Bend Washington. The next home game will open the Indiana Northern State Conference season with a April 17 visit from Tippecanoe Valley. LAVILLE 10 SOUTH BEND RILEY 0 At Newton Park, Lakeville, IN.
