Note: Adds game comments from LaVille coach Garrett McBride MICHIGAN CITY - The LaVille softball team traveled to Michigan City for a non-conference game against Marquette Catholic. LHS used 10 hits, 13 base on balls and eight errors to pick up a 27-9 victory. The win was the first of the season for the Lancers and 1st-year head coach Garrett McBride. The trio of Lexis Owens, Ema Coplen and Grace McBride cranked out three hits each. Coplen drove in four runs and Owens tied a school-record with six stolen bases in a game. Owens now shares the single game record with 2014 graduate Hannah Herbster, who stole 6 bases against Marcellus (Michigan) in 2013. "The team is starting to get more comfortable with what we are trying to do on offense and the pressure on the bases started to show last night," said LaVille coach Garrett McBride. "Lexis Owens stole six bases and Caydence Pena scored 6 runs. They kept the defense on edge with bunts, fake bunts and solid hitting. "We had a very intense defensive practice on Tuesday and that showed with our best defensive game so far this season with us only committing one error," continued the Lancer coach, who also picked up his first victory as the Lancer head coach. "We took care of the ball and once again had some diving plays from Lexis Owens and Grace McBride to anchor our defense. Sydney Williams is performing exceptional at 1B for us as a freshman. Though we were able to mark down our first win of the season some other items were exposed that we need to work on. Grace McBride recorded 10 strikeouts in 5 innings, but walks are still something we are working on as a staff to limit the free passes and let our defense get opportunities to get outs. We will continue to learn and work hard and hopefully put a couple more in the win column this year. Grace McBride earned the win in the circle, striking out 10 batters in five innings of work. With the victory over Marquette, the Lancers look to establish a new winning streak after breaking a 19-game losing string, dating back to the 2024 season. LHS will return to action on April 17 against Jimtown. The first pitch for the INSC contest is scheduled for 5:30pm at Newton Park.
