LAKEVILLE - We are excited to team together with Jersey Mike's Subs as they sponsor a Player of the Week at LaVille High School! Coaches and LaVille Athletic Department personnel will select various student-athletes from baseball, boys golf, boys track and field, girls tennis, girls track and field, and softball. Our baseball recipient this week is LaVille senior Collin Czarnecki. He was nominated by coach Brian Lawler. Though his at-bats have been limited due to injury, Czarnecki is still helping in the field and on the bump. The senior is 2-0 with a sparkling 1.37 earned run average. Czarnecki has struck out 22 batters, while issuing five base on balls through 15 1/3 innings. We had a minute to catch up with Collin to talk about the season and a key INSC series against rival Bremen."The season has gone pretty well," said Czarnecki. "We have competed pretty well this year and feel like we have a shot at winning the conference. We have to stay strong for that." So how are things going for Czarnecki in the field and at the plate? "I've been playing infield and pitcher," the 6-foot 3-inch Czarnecki replied. "I haven't been able to hit recently due to an injury, but I'm doing pretty well defensively. A local rival that is huge for bragging rights and ultimately placement in conference standings is against Bremen. "So we've got two games against Bremen," noted Collin. "And that's a big one because the two of us are who people think have a chance to win the conference. To go undefeated in this series is always huge at the end." The Friday May 2 game is set to be played at Four Winds Field, home of the South Bend Cubs. The first pitch is set for 7pm and Collin says, "This is a great opportunity for sure. In my four years (of high school ball) I've never had the opportunity to play at Four Winds. I think it will be a cool atmosphere and I think a lot of people will come out from both communities because it is a neat experience." As we closed our conversation, Collin noted his appreciation for the opportunity given to the student-athletes at LaVille this spring. "I definitely like Jersey Mike's Sub. It's an honor to be nominated especially because it is a bigger company around here that people are aware of. I also appreciate the fact that they are representing us and LaVille has a chance to represent them, as well." Note: At Jersey Mike's Subs, we're all about quality.
