Girls Soccer Has Right Mindset, Rallies For Win At Argos

ARGOS - LaVille head girls soccer coach Kevin Christy knew that the Argos match on Thursday night was going to be a test. A test for his upperclassmen and for the newcomers that make up the 2025 Lancer team. Yes, LHS is off to a 2-0 start. However, coach Christy's Lancers have not been challenged yet. That is until the Argos match at Eugene Snyder Field. Christy's club had the choice of battle or end the match with a loss to the Dragons. LHS chose to step up and came away with a hard-earned 3-2 victory. The match is a great small school rivalry, along with a potential future sectional opponent. "It was a necessary game," said Christy, when asked about the match against Argos. "We have had two wins by comfortable margins and haven't faced adversity. We needed a game like this. We got down early and the question was were we going to fight through it or end in a loss." Argos posted the first score of the match in the 11th minute when junior Haley Shafer netted Argos' first shot from the left side to put AHS up, 1-0. Freshman Cheney VanTornout put in a rebound shot after Leena Karkiewicz corner kick was flushed out. VanTornout launched her shot to the far right corner of the goal to tickle the twine. The score remained tied at 1-1 into halftime.0 Argos took the lead again as Hayna Willis found Madison Reynolds racing down the right wing. Willis had the ball near midfield, turned and made a pass that Reynolds tracked down just outside of the box. Reynolds sprinted away from the Lancer defense, then launched the shot toward the goal. The ball was just over the outstretched leap of the LaVille goalkeeper's fingers and tucked into the left side of the net. Argos now led, 2-1, with 30 minute remaining. Then about three minutes later, LaVille's Lexi McQueen lifted a ball toward the Argos goal. Macie Edwards hustled for the ball, headed the ball over the Argos goalies then after the ball rattled around both teams, Edwards nudged the ball past the defense to force a 2-all tie. Both teams continued to battle over the next 25 minutes or so until McQueen dribbled the ball toward the 18-yard line. She got open for a moment, and, without hesitation, launched a shot from about 40 yards out. The ball was over the goalie, but below the crossbar for the goal and the final score. "Every player was part of this win tonight," said Christy, who has now helped LaVille two straight in the series. We asked coach Christy if he felt anyone led the team to the victory. "No one in particular has to lead," explained Christy. "This is just like last year where everybody is a leader on this team. You can be a senior or junior, underclassman ... You can come off the bench. We preach that every single player has a voice." Our conversation then moved to the shots and that not one shot was more important than another. "Our third goal stands as the one that helped us tonight's match," said Christy. "All three goals carry equal amounts. "You have a goal where we carry the ball through," continued the coach. "We scored on a rebound shot. We have one go in off a set piece. You can't really say one is more important. I actually then start looking at the missed shots as being important. It keeps the intensity up and what kind of mindset that the girls were in. Our girls had the right mindset tonight." Ultimately, the final goal by Lexi McQueen ended up being the difference in Thursday's match. Another match in the great Class 1A girls soccer series between Argos and LaVille. LaVille improved to 3-0 and will open the Manchester Invitational against Logansport (0-5) at 9am ET August 30. Western (5-1) will battle the host Spartans (1-2-1) in the other first round match. Championship and consolation matches are set for 11:15am at the Good Soccer Fields across the street from Manchester Jr-Sr High School. "You want to be as confident as you can be going into that tournament," Christy said, referring to the weekend tournament. "They have a good team with fans that are engaged and also a sectional opponent. We have to prepare for Logansport ... see what they have and do our film study (tonight). The girls are geared for it and they have been talking about it for the last week. It is on their radar, but I feel like we are in a good head space right now. We would like to defend again."
