NORTH JUDSON - LaVille head football coach Jeff Kaiser knew the week two football match up with #5 North Judson was going to be a physical one. "When we speak of North Judson, we know it's going to be a war," said Kaiser late last week. "And we look forward to a well-coached team that has been a solid small school rivalry the past 6-7 years." The play was exactly as predicted by Kaiser and, though the Lancers battled, came up just short in a 21-14 setback to the Blue Jays. "It was what we thought it would be in a physical matchup as always with them," Kaiser said after the game.  "We came out flat and dug ourselves a 14 point hole after the first 12 minutes.  However once we did settle in and play assignment football, we put ourselves in a position to win by playing some lock down defense, executed a big special teams play that resulted in a touchdown and also got a big pass play for a score. "Our guys never gave up and fought to the end by outscoring the Jays 14-7 the final 3 quarters ... however in a big game you must play 48 minutes." The game was filled with big plays and a few series where yards were hard to come. North Judson's Aiden McGowen took the opening kick off and at the 18 yard line, busted up the middle and followed a caravan of four blockers 82 yards for the opening touchdown.  The kick failed and the hosts led by a 6-0 count. Quarterback Ayson Harper scored on the next drive to make it 12-0 late in the first quarter.  Evan McGowen went over the left side for the 2-point conversion to give NJSP a 14-0 lead. Kaiser's crew got back on track midway through the second quarter.  Facing a 3rd down and 6, Lancer quarterback Brayden Schwitz avoided the rush by Kaden Johnson to find Konnor Amor.  After beating his defender, Amor caught the ball and was able to out sprint the North Judson defenders for a 76 yard TD catch.Calebi Skiles added the point-after and the lead deficit was cut, 14-7. "You don't expect big plays to happen, you just expect your guys to play hard every single play and things will happen by doing so," noted Kaiser.  "That opening kickoff return for a TD definitely hurt us from the beginning." Right before halftime, NJSP was able to get on the board again. Harper took the Blue Jays offense down the field and capped off a 12-play drive with a 3-yard QB sneak with 25.2 second left before intermission.  Harper then added the PAT to increase the Judson lead to 21-7. After a North Judson interception in the end zone, Harper drove the hosts down the field.  In what looked like a would-be field goal after LaVille put a halt to the Blue Jay offense at the 11-yard line, Lancer special teams came up with a much-needed big play. Skiles was able to break free from the right side of the line of scrimmage and block the FG attempt. Amor was in the right place at the right time as the ball bounced directly to him. The 5'-11" junior wasted no time in heading toward the end zone for a 83 yard return for a momentum-shifting score.  Skiles booted the PAT to narrow the deficit to 21-14 just seconds before the end of the third period. In the fourth stanza, the physical battle continued by both respective teams before Lancers held North Judson on downs at the 2-yard line. Schwitz and the LaVille offense was able to move out of the shadow of their own end zone late in the fourth until a 1st and 10 pass attempt was intercepted by Zander Nowak.  The NJSP made the final snap and the clock hit zeroes. "The trench was a war ... always is in this matchup," Kaiser said when asked about the game on the line of scrimmage and beyond the big plays.  "Our D-Line played well, but our O-Line must get confident in what they are doing and execute at a higher level if we want to have success moving forward." As we dug a little deeper inside Friday's game between #11 LaVille and #5 North Judson, we asked Kaiser what he felt was the difference in the game? "Difference in the game was not playing 48 minutes," said Kaiser very matter-of-factly.  "Once we figured out we were in for a battle, the guys played well and executed our adjustments we made.  We just needed to lock in from the start and unfortunately we did not." Schwitz finished 9 of 21 for 155 yards, four interceptions and one touchdown pass.  The LHS rushing game was held to 2.0 yard per carry in 16 carries.  Amor caught two balls for 105 yards. LaVille evens out its record at 1-1 and will play host to Central Noble September 5.  Kick is scheduled for 7pm at Lancer Field.
