Football Rallies Before Falling At Tippecanoe Valley

AKRON - As the LaVille football team tried to break into the Indiana Northern State Conference win column, Lancer coach Jeff Kaiser knew Tippecanoe Valley liked to run the football. "Valley is a solid ball team with size and speed that will mix it up a bit on the offensive side of the ball and have a very versatile QB," Kaiser said prior to Friday's INSC contest. "Upfront they have size to compliment what they do." Tippecanoe Valley was coming in averaging just 10.5 yards through the air, but an impressive 214+ yards per game on the ground. And though LaVille rallied on a couple of occasions at Smith-Bibler to stay in the game, it was the ground attack of the Vikings that won out in a 38-28 final. The Lancers moved to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the INSC. Valley improved to 3-2 and 1-1 in conference play. "I felt the team battled hard until the end but came up short," said Kaiser. "We put ourselves in a position to win after being down the entire game. To be able to do that against a quality opponent in Tippy Valley is a good sign of us not giving up." The Akron hosts got on the board first after leading rusher Wes Parker scored on a 10-yard run. Gage Overbey came on to add the first of five point-after kicks to go with a 26FG. Also adding to the LaVille rushing issue was Grady Moriarty, who topped out just short of 200 yards on the ground, highlighted by a 49 yard jaunt. Moriarty finished the night with 194 yards, while Parker added 121. LaVille rallied with a long distance connection between Brayden Schwitz and Konnor Amor for an 87-yard bomb to tie the at 7-7 at about the midway point of the first. TV scored a pair of touchdowns of Moriarty's run and then Owen Omondi scooted 29 yards to paydirt. Kaiser's crew could have easily packed it in, but instead chose to battle. With Schwitz running the controls, the Lancers moved the ball inside the red zone before the quick-moving quarterback packed bags for a 10-yard TD run. In the third quarter, each team shared a fumble prior to Overbey's 19-yard INT for a touchdown. Leading 31-14 with right around 6:00 left in the third, LaVille took advantage of Schwitz's legs following a 19-yard scamper and then another big pass play of 60 yards to Amor. Suddenly the game went from a 17 point bulge to just a three-point game with about seven minutes remaining. Parker put the finishing touches on a 38-28 victory after bulldozing in for the decisive TD. "Upfront, Valley gets off the ball well so our Dline had some issues keeping our LB's free and then they mixed up their running game so well to keep us guessing was the biggest issue," explained Kaiser.During that crucial offensive burst to help change the momentum, Kaiser noted that LHS, "... So the big play strikes to Amor that we had is what we are looking for in that passing game. The line gave Schwitz time and all the WR's ran routes hard to create the opening. Schwitz had a solid Offensive game by rushing for 2 scores and passing for 2. Ending with over 225 yds passing. "We made some defensive adjustments that gave Valley some fits," Kaiser continued of the halftime game plan, "and we were getting some stops we needed, and then the offense we were able to mix things up and move the ball to get a few scores to make the game interesting." LHS was able to mix their running and passing game on offense - going for a season-best 126 on the ground and another season-best 262 through the air. "We work our passing game everyday at practice, so the timing and execution between the QB and WRs is very crucial in our offense," explained Kaiser. "As we are in the second part of our regular season, we expect those guys to be on the same page with timing and proper routes being run each week." Schwitz played a big part in all four LaVille touchdowns with two rushing and two passing scores. Amor hauled in a career-high 176 yards overall, including a career-best 90-yard TD reception. LaVille continues to work through its five straight-week INSC schedule, hosting 3A #5 Knox September 26 at 7:30pm ET Friday September 26. "We must block and tackle well to be able to stick to our game plan for 48 minutes against Knox." Kaiser concluded. TIPPECANOE VALLEY 38 LAVILLE 28 At Smith-Bibler Field, Akron, IN.
