LAKEVILLE - The volleyball team played host to Culver Community Wednesday in a non-conference high school match at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. LaVille battled before falling 3-0 to the Cavaliers. In the first set, the LHS and CCHS fought through three tie scores before a 10-2 run late helped Culver to a 25-15 win. Set two started quickly for the Cavs, but a couple of three-point rallies sparked the Lancers to a 10-6 lead. LaVille kept the set close and following a pair of aces by Olivia Markin, LHS took a 14-12 advantage. Culver, however, used a couple of unforced errors and timely kills by Hayden Lute and Chloe Lewis to regain the lead, 17-14. Kills by Ragen Wagoner and Madi Singleton kept the Lakeville hosts within striking distance at 20-16, but a block by Ashlynn Berndt, an ace from Lute, and a kill by Olivia Davis put the set away, 25-18. In the third set, coach Pat Gring's club used some nicely placed kills and scrappy defense, but seven Cavalier aces and too many scoring runs completed the sweep. Culver improves to 15-11 overall, while LaVIlle moves to 5-12 overall. Coach Gring's team will travel to Tippecanoe Valley on October 2. It will be the final Indiana Northern State Conference match for the Lancers, who are looking for the first conference victory. Valley is 2-2 in loop play. LaVille will also travel to the Caston Invitational October 4. The Lancers will begin pool play action against Caston and Taylor. Championship and consolation matches will conclude pool play in the main gym and elementary gym.
