GAMEDAY: Football Renews Rivalry With John Glenn

WALKERTON - There are a lot of similarities between LaVille and John Glenn heading into the October 3 battle between old Indiana Highway 6 high school football neighbors. The two teams have been longtime rivals in more than just football, especially being, oh, 10 miles or so from each other. The school boundary lines are right next to each other in St. Joseph County, a little south of South Bend, Indiana. The Indiana Northern State Conference tilt is scheduled to kick at 7pm ET. For years these two were conference rivals. When they both split and went their separate ways in conference alignment about 10 years back, they still played each other. The kids know each other and there are certainly bragging rights on the line. Points scored and points allowed are eerily similar - John Glenn averages 18.8 and allows 22.2 and LaVille scores 22.3 on offense and gives up 22.8 defensively. The respective defenses are also right there, sharing similar turnover ratios. "It is definitely a big game for us," said senior quarterback Brayden Schwiz. "We definitely got through a rough patch of the season (this past few weeks). I don't think our record shows who we are because we have played some tough teams. This game can help us turn it around and gain some momentum into the end of the season and sectional." When asked what he feels will be the difference in the 58th game of the series, the Lancer QB said, "The difference is definitely offense. I am the quarterback. Whoever scores the most points tonight will come away with the victory. We've got to convert on the ball and have at least double digit first downs and throw for over 200 and run for over 100." Classmate and all-state player Brayden Foster said that this game is important when the Lancers look at the schedule. "We have this game circled on the schedule," said Foster. "We are 2-4 and this is going to get us back on the right track. We've been looking at these guys since summer. They are in our backyard, so this is important." We also asked Foster about the seven-game consecutive win streak for LaVille in the series. "We always look at it like it is 0-0. We've got to play assignment football. We have got to do our jobs and not get caught up in all the stuff they do over there and we will have a good game." LaVille enters the Week #7 contest at 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the Indiana Northern State Conference following a 62-16 setback to 3A #5 Knox a week ago. "As a staff we feel the guys are playing hard each and every time they go to battle on Friday nights," said Lancer coach Jeff Kaiser. "We just need to shore up our mistakes and play assignment football. This week is a must win week for our program against a quality rival opponent." According to Kaiser, "They bring a similar style of offensive attack as we do and play an aggressive 4 front defense that wants to make you make mistakes." Archer Rust leads the Falcon running at 52.5 per game. Rust also tops John Glenn's passing game with 111.3 yards per outing. The top receiving target is Brayden Benwell at nearly 40 yards/game. On defense, Ayden Smigielski leads the team in tackles with a bit over 10. Cole Stafford tops the LaVille running game, but QB Schwitz can also pack bags for a chunk of real estate. Schwitz averages just under 190 yards through the air. Game on ...
