ARGOS - LaVille knew it was going to be a battle against Argos in the second semifinal of the Class 1A Sectional #36 tournament. Earlier in the season, the Lancers edged the Dragons 3-2 at Eugene Snyder Field. This time it was defense that shined through for both teams, as LaVille came away with a 1-0 victory to advance to the sectional title match. "The game was a really hard fought game," said LaVille coach Kevin Christy shortly after the thrilling semifinal. "Both teams gave 100% effort. Argos is a physical and aggressive team. Our girls were able to keep their composure and battle through every wave they sent. Really solid play all around and a complete team effort." Though the Dragons controlled possession time for most of the match, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie into the intermission. Limited in shots, LaVille, however, took advantage of its best scoring opportunity near the midway point of the second half. Lancer freshman Madison Mishler and sophomore teammate Kailey Hicks played a game of, well, I'll let Mishler explain what she saw on the field. "I saw an opportunity for a drop-pass and a through ball ... It was a give-and-go," said Mishler. "I saw a good window to be able to pass the ball and sprint through and that's what happened. Kailey Hicks read what I was doing, and that is the trust amongst us. She knew exactly what to do. If she would have taken a couple of extra seconds to pass, it might not have been there. Her pass was amazing." Sounds like something soccer teams work on in practice. “We had a great through ball played to Madison Mishler," explained Christy. "She has great speed and has learned how to finish the ball really well. We had a few opportunities show up that we didn't quite take advantage of. We were able to take advantage of those little gaps teams give us. Madison is a good athlete and will find the gap. She’s a great finisher.” After the LHS goal, the Lancers did a nice job keeping the Argos offense at bay and played solid defense. From kicking balls out of bounds to letting its goalie Denni Markin make Dragon shot attempts up. Markin was more than solid throughout as was her defensive-minded teammates. "The defense was awesome," said Mishler. "Denni had such an awesome game. You could tell she was confident and she didn't second guess. She had great punts up the field and directed her teammates . Our defense played so well. We went into the game with so much confidence and the trust they have with each other. It was a team effort." Unofficially, Argos outshot LaVille, 15-2, with the Lancer defense and Markin coming up with the clean sheet. “The girls fought hard,” Christy said. “They’ve improved and we’ve improved. It was a great game.” IHSAA CLASS 1A SECTIONAL #36 At Argos LaVille 1 Argos 0 Score By Halves LaVille 0 1 - 1 Argos 0 0 - 0 Scoring Summary First Half No goals Second Half LV - 57' Madison Mishler (Kailey Hicks) Shots: LaVille 2, Argos 15 Corner Kicks: LaVille 0, Argos 0 Goalies Saves: LaVille (Denni Markin) 15, Argos 1
