BAUGO TOWNSHIP - Heading into Friday's high school football showdown between LaVille and Jimtown, the Lancers knew it had been a long time since they defeated the Jimmies.  In fact, it has been since October 18, 1985 since the Lancers won on Knepp Field at Sharpe Stadium. On a side note, the last time LHS won in the series was August 31, 1990 at Lancer Field. As for the Friday night final Indiana Northern State Conference game of the season for both teams, it was LaVille that came away with a thrilling 28-27 victory. “It’s been a while,” said LaVille head coach Jeff Kaiser. “(Beating Jimtown) was on the checklist. It’s a good feeling.” Leading 21-7 heading into the fourth quarter, Jimtown put up two touchdowns compliments of Owen Glass and his second and third TDs on the evening. Regulation ended in a 21-21 tie. The Jimmies ended up with the ball first in overtime and promptly tossed the ball to Nash Hamby, who sprinted 10-yards untouched to paydirt.  The PAT snap was high and Dylan Miller tackled the holder, giving the Jimmies a 27-21 lead. Coach Kaiser's club then had its turn on offense.  LHS was whistled for a false start before its first play of OT, then the Jims defense held LaVille to a short two yard gain. Facing a 2nd-and-long, Lancer QB Brayden Schwitz sent Cole Stafford left on a fake handoff, then rolled out to the right.  Schwitz was able to beat a couple defenders around the right edge and was forced out of bounds at the one. On the next play, the offensive line was able to fend off any would-be tacklers and Stafford cleared the goal line before being touched for the tying touchdown. Then after a Jimtown timeout, Caleb Skiles calmly nailed the PAT for LaVille and the Lancer losing streak was over. “A lot of guts,” said Kaiser when asked about his team's effort. “In practice you put your guys in situations where their backs are against the wall and test them. They scored on the first play in overtime and our backs were against the wall. I told the guys, ‘Do what we do.’ Our kicker was warming up all the time, but I’m not going to lie. If they make that extra point, we’re going for 2, the win on the road.” Stafford led the rushing attack with 91 yards on 17 carries and three TDs.  Schwitz, who went 17 for 21 for 181 yards and one touchdown through the air, also chipped in with 43 yards rushing on 10 totes. Top receivers for LHS included Stafford, who had eight catches for 72 yards, and Noah Menis, who hauled in five aerials for 51 yards. Both teams scored in the first half and a 7-7 tie went to halftime intermission. Stafford helped LaVille move its opening drive of the game, culminating in a 3-yard plunge. Skiles finished the game 4-4 on PATs. "We came out ready to play, then Jimtown turned it up a notch and started to play,” added Kaiser. “I’m proud of my guys though, proud of the effort.” LaVille is now 4-4 overall and 2-3 in INSC play.  The Lancers return home October 17 to play host to Whiting on 'Senior Night'.
