LAKEVILLE - Looking to continue the momentum into the high school state football tournament, LaVille played host to Whiting in the regular season finale. Prior to kick off, the LHS football program took time to recognize its senior players. A total of 10 young men were joined by parents and/or guardians as they potentially played their final home game on Lancer Field. There was a late start due to traffic for the Whiting team, but once the pre-game festivities were over and the game got started, the Lancers relaxed and played football. Leading the way for the Lakeville hosts was the six touchdown passes from Brayden Schwitz, which led to the Lancers cruising to a 70-7 Senior Night victory at Lancer Field. "We felt once we settled in after the senior night recognition and the delay to the start of the game, we played the way we are capable of playing," noted LaVille coach Jeff Kaiser. "Anytime you have a balanced attack and are creating turnovers the game is going to get lopsided quick as long as you are putting points on the board after you have created those turnovers." Schwitz finished the night 8 of 12 for 157 yards and no interceptions. During a fine finale home game win, Schwitz set the single season touchdown passing record and touchdown passes in a regular season game. "Brayden Schwitz's accomplishments to this point is a reflection of his work in the weightroom during the off season," explained the Lancer boss. "Being dedicated to our playbook which has allowed him to be coachable and understand things and him developing a solid relationship with his teammates to create trust of executing the plays to achieve these accomplishments to this point." Coach Jeff Kaiser's club also got big runs from scrimmage - a 53 yard TD jaunt Brock Gest and a 68 yard sprint for Lawrence Wood - as LaVille hustled for 200 yards on the ground. Stafford ran for 127 yards rushing, while Wood added 73 on the ground. The Lancers also came up with 4 turnovers - fumble recoveries by Keenan Richhart, Kaleb Arnold, and Stafford. Noah Menis snagged an interception. "This was a team effort on this big win," said Kaiser. "We always want this to be a memorable night for our seniors and having guys like Bock Gest and Peyton Cline find paydirt is something we hope to be able to make happen by putting ourselves in that position and our guys did just that. Along with them some guys having some breakout games as well was Dylan Miller going for 3 TD receptions and then Lawrence Wood teasing the 80 yd mark rushing to go with a bug long run for a TD. We like for many guys to contribute to what we do and this past Friday every player in our high school program did just that!" As the conversation closed, we had the chance to ask Kaiser what impressed him most about his team. "What impressed me the most is how we were able to put away a team that we felt we could," said Kaiser. "We ... played aggressive LaVille football and our younger guys were ready to go and played hard. Watching them play on a Friday night under the lights, which for some of them was the first time, and seeing our varsity guys cheering them on is what you like to see especially late in the year as we gear up for the tourney." LHS improves to 5-4 over and will travel to Culver Community October 24 for the first round of the IHSAA state tournament. Whiting drops to 2-7 and will play host to Bremen in the Class 2A sectional bracket, also Oct 24.
